Hypothyroidism
Underactive thyroid
The thyroid doesn't make enough hormone. It is the most common thyroid problem and is much more common in women.
- How it's diagnosed
- A raised TSH, usually with a low T4, on a blood test.
- How it's treated
- A daily levothyroxine tablet that replaces the missing hormone. The dose is adjusted using TSH tests, and treatment is usually lifelong.
